Accident Insurance.

(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —I think that the remarks made in your issue yesterday by Mr P. Maher are to the point, and well timed. A telegram which appeared in another column of the Times was ample proof of that, the Union Company being called on to pay heavy damages in an accident case in which there seemed to be a very reasonable defence. The representatives of all public bodies should take no riskwhatever in this matter. It is all very well to say that if an accident occurred to any member of the Hospital staff, that person would be uursed, and would be paid half wages ; but that is not sufficient protection. Prudence dictates that the staff should be insured, and I fail to see that any argument can be adduced in opposition to such a view. I am not speaking out of any consideration for the special individual alluded to, but as one who has to help to pay for the maintenance of the Hospital, and who has found it necessary to give some special consideration to this subject. Of course I give the members of the Hospital Board credit for believing that they are doing the right thing in wanting to save the insurance premium, but it seems to me penny wise and pound foolish, and as I feel so strongly on the subject I feel it my duty to say what I have said. I cordially support the view expressed by Mr Maher.—l am, etc., A Subscriber.
