ORGAN RECITAL.
Thkkk was a large congregation at Holy Trinity Church last evening, when a recital of sacred music was given by Mr E. T. Morshead, of Wellington, assisted by several leading vocalists. The programme was an exceedingly choice one, and was much appreciated by lovers of sacred music in Gisborne. The overture from Handel’s oratorio, “ Sampson,” was exceptionally well rendered by Mr Morshead, who appeared to have complete command over the organ in spite of its present defective condition. His other numbers were Hayn’s “In Native Worth,” Costa’s “ Triumphal March,” Mendellsohn’s “ Hymn of Praise,” and the last number, which was exceptionally fine, Beethoven’s “ Hallelujah ” from the .oratorio “ Mount of Olives.” The several pieces were carefully treated, and were much appreciated by the congregation. Mr Barlow, who was in excellent voice, gave a splendid interpretation of Piccolomini’s “ Eece Homo,” being followed by Mr J. East, who sang Handel's “ Waft her, Angels,” which admirably suited his tenor voice. Mr Foreman contributed
“The Holy City” in a pleasing manner. He possesses a good baritone voice, and appeared at greater advantage last evening than on any previous occasion in Gisborne, the solo being enjoyed by all present. The concluding solo, “ King liver Glorious,” from Stainer's well-known
“ Crucifixion,’’ was splendidly rendered by Mr Coster, who possesses a true tenor voice. Ho sang with great expression and pathos. Miss Gray, unfortunately, was unable to sing, being one of the many victims of the influenza epidemic. The recital was given under the supervision of Mr E. D. Smith, who is deserving of the thanks of the congregation for the assiduous manner in which he worked to make it the success it undoubtedly proved. We trust that this is the initial of a series of such recitals, as they are much required in Gisborne, being calculated- to cultivate the musical taste. The collection was in aid of the Church funds.
