SPORTING.

NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS,

(Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. Good acceptances havo been received by the Canterbury Jockey Club for the third day’s racing of their winter mooting, and some first-class racing should be witnessed. For tho Hunters’ Handicap Steeplechase, two miles, a fiold of seven is 011gaged. Tho top weight, Iv Jam 12.7, is nicely weighted, and whatever beats him should win. The placed horses should be K Jam, Rowlock, and Doopey, in the order named. Tho laige field of nineteen have accepted for the .Ueatheoto Handicap, seven furlongs. Jabber, 11.12, will tako a lot of beating, this being his pet distance. Crusoe 11.11, Battleaxe 11.8, Tauhei 10.8, aud Mars 9.10 are all nicely treated, and the race bears a very open aspect. In selecting Jabber to win, with Tauhei and Crusoe as his nearest attendants, I do not think I shall be far out.

A field of eight have cried content in the Sydenham Hurdle Race, lij miles. The Grand National winner Hadyn heads the list with 11.5, under which impost ho will be hard to beat. Long Tom 11.13, The Hemp'.o 9.13, and Dartmoor 9.7, are all nicely handicapped. To sum up I will select The Hempie, Haydn, and Long Tom, with Dartmoor as a likely one to bring off a surprise. The Hunters’ Hurdles, once round and a distanco, has a field of seven engaged. K Jam 12.4, [Larboard Watch 12.9, and The Jester 12.4, appear to be the pick of the handicaps, and I will place them in that order.

In the Lincoln Steeplechase, 2.} miles, the finish should be fought out between Moifaa 13.13, and Straybird 11.5, and I will look to the latter to supply the winner.

For the Sehvyn Handicap, 6 furlongs, sixteen horses havo accepted, and I prefer the chance of Cora Linn (11.10) to anything else in the race. Tauhei and Sundial should fill the other places.

In tho Hunters’ Plate Handicap, miles, Tho Jester (12.7) should about win, with Larboard Watch and Mangatira as his most dangerous opponents.
