IMPORTANT CEREMONY AT AUCKLAND.

A ceremony of considerable importance to Auckland took place at noon to-day, when the first ground was broken for the purpose of laying tho rails for the electric tramway.

Mr Hansen formally asked tho Mayor (Mr Kidd), on behalf of his company, to perform the ceremony. A silvor-bladed shovel (manufactured by Mr A. Ilokn) was then handed to the Mayor, who removed from tho road two shovelfuls of earth and stones.

A dinner was subsequently hold at the Star Hotel, when congratulatory speeches were delivered.
