Our Wairoa correspondent writes:— Owing to the lata heavy rains there is a fresh in the river, and" we are looking forward to the advent of the steamer once again—coming up the river to the wharf as sopn as the sea moderates. It is now three months since the steamer put in an appearance at the wharf, and at last we live in hopes of seeing her once more lying alongside the wharf and discharging cargo.
Sir J. G. Ward addressed the Racing Conference yesterday morning, congratulating it upon the work done, and stated- it was not intended to introduce any legislation this year affecting the totalisator or tote betting, In regard to the question of the' voting power of the Conference, it was announced that the Taranaki Jockey Club, Greymouth Jockey Club, Taranaki'District- and the Canterbury District (north of Hurunui), and Greymouth District Clubs should have two votes each.
