In the House of Lords the Early Closing of Shops Committee submitted a report recommending that the Town Council should bo empowered to pass provisional orders for early closing, such orders to be submitted to Parliament before operating. Berlin, June IC.
The Pekin correspondent of the Ivreuz Zeitung states that the Australian horses used by the Germans in China are very good.
Capetown, July 16. Sir Gordon Sprigg states that ho intends to convene, at the end of the year, a Customs Conference for the whole of South Africa to discuss the establishment of a united tariff.
Melbourne, July 16. Findley, who was expelled from the House, has been defoated by Mr Dcegan, at East Melbourne, by nearly two to one. A scone occurred at the polling booth owing to a camera being used for the purpose of aiding in the detection of impersonators. Tlic Government ordered the discontinuance of the camera, but before that was effected, Dr Maloney, a member of the Assembly, entering to vote, saw the camera and smashed it.
Tlie Premier sought the advice of the Imperial Government in regard to the seizure and suppressing of the Tocsin.
Mr Chamberlain replied, deprecating such action.
The Leader of the Opposition protested against the Government seeking the advice. They should have taken the whole responsibility, and not place the State in the position of having little more than a Crown colony.
Brisbane, July IG. Parliament has opened. Sydney, July 16. Some portions of a human body have been found at Hordern’s. They are believed to be Dashwood’s. The search revealed the terrible end of the victims. Dashwood had smashed the iron bars guarding the pavement light ; a few minutes more, and ho would have broken the glass and reached the street, but evidently he was overcome at the critical moment.
