TO-DAY’S RACES. NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS. ! "By Early Bird.] > The Steeplechase Meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club will be brought to a conclusion at the Park racecourse to-day, and, favored with fine weather, there should be a large attendance. The acceptances, which fell due last evening, are even more satisfactory than on the opening day, and a capital day’s sport should result. They arc as follows : Second Hurdles, T{ miles, j Scallywag ... 12 0 Sylvanus ... 0 10 | Stray bird ... 10 13 The Gryphon 9 8 Voltigeur 11. 10 10 Merry 80y... 9 0 Hunters' Flat, 11 miles. Gipsy Queen 11 7 Papatu ... 9 2 Ad ml Hawke 11 7 Don ... 9 0 Vathek ... 9 8 Merry 80y... 9 0 Unique ... 9 4 Malcolm " ... 9 0 The progrtimmo opens with the Hurdle Race, for which a field of six have accepted, Waitio, Mokomoko, Pourere, Tarragan, Ilyins, and Cronje being the absentees. Scallywag heads the list with 12.0, the Turqarise gelding having been raised from 11.0 on account of his victory on Tuesday. Although he won his race in good style, 1 hardly think he will be seen at the front to-day. Straybird has also gone up three pounds, hut shogld run a great lior.se, and whatever beats him should win. Voltigeur with the handy impost of 10.10 is also well in, as also are Sylvanus and The Gryphon. They should finish in the following order—

i Straybird ... ... 1 i Sylvanus ... ... 2 j The Gryphon ... ... ;j | A field of eight are engaged in the I Hunters’ Flat Handicap, which presents a | most open appearance. Malcolm has the heavy impost of 13.10, whilst the minimum weight is 11.0. Notwithstanding his heavy weight the son of Daniel O’Rourke must have a great chance. Ho won his raco on Tuesday in the easiest possible manner, and will take a lot of beating to-day. Ballinger and Ivnight Templar are much fancied for this event, as also is Snaphanco. I shall place them in tlio following order—l Malcolm... ... ... 1 Ballinger ... ... 2 Knight Templar... ... 3 The Te Ilapara Handicap should produce a line race, as the winner is well concealed. Gipsy Queen on her running on Tuesday must bo given a great chance, whilst Admiral Hawke is not to be despised. The local representatives are Vathek, Unique and Papatu,. and no doubt one of them will be about at the finish to dispute honors for first place. They should finish as follows Gipsy Queen ... ... 1 Admiral Hawke ... 2 Papatu ... ... ... 3

Seven Juivo cried content for the Park Steeplechase, Scallywag being allotted the honor of heading the list with the tidy impost of 12.7. The Napier representative will require to bo in the best of nick to carry oil this event, as he has several worthy opponents to moot. Straybird and Sylvanus must he given a chance, as also must The Gryphon. The owner of the latter has nothing to complain of with regard to the handicap, and whatever beats the Wonderland gelding should win. The placed division should he : The Gryphon ... ... 1 Straybird ... ... 2 Scallywag ... ... 3

The Hack Race has a field of five, and a good race should result. Chancellor 11. is greatly fancied for this event, but I expect to sec his colors again lowered by A.B.N. Ilaati Puru has many followers and is bound to be well backed. My selection is as follows ; A.B.N 1 Chancellor 11. ... ... 2 Haati Puru a The Tally-ho Steeplechase is likely to see eight starters, and all appear to bo well treated. Ballinger is top weight, and should be among the place-getters. Peter Osbeck was unfortunate in falling on Tuesday, and if he can bo got to jump today must take a lot of beating. The Fencer and Sailor arc also well treated, and should be handy at the finish. My tip is— Peter Osbcck ... ... 1 Sailor ... ... 2 Ballinger... ... ... 8 The Final Handicap will depend a great deal on previous running, but whatever beats Admiral Hawke should win. Gipsy Queen and Papatu should bo his most troublesome opponents. Unique and Vathek will also bo well supported. I expect to sec the numbers go up as follows : Admiral Hawke... ... 1 Gipsy Queen 2 Papatu ... ... ... a By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, July 10. Betting is fairly active for the National Steeplechase. Freedom, Laceby, and Pirate dispute favor at 7 to 1. African has been backed for several thousand at 100 to 7. closing at 100 to b.
