GISBORNE RACING CLUB. STEEPLECHASE MEETING. Glohiol-.s weather prevailed for the opening day of the Gisborne Racing Club's 1 steeplechase meeting, which took place ar | the Park Company’s pretty grounds at Te Hapara yesterday. The attendance was well up to the average, and speculation was particularly brisk, the sum of X 2910 being passed through the totaiisators. The machines were in charge of Messrs Barry and Hogan, and the dividends were paid out with the utmost promptitude. The arrangements for the meeting were of the most complete character, and the smooth manner in which everything went off was highly flattering to the Club's secretary, Mr M. G. Nasmith. The starter's Hag was weilded by Mr J. Brown, | whilst the duties of Clerk of Course were discharged by Mr Pritchard. Mr J. E. Whitby made an efficient Clerk of Scales, and Mr W. O. Skeet as totalisator steward proved the right man in the right place. Luncheon was provided by Mr J. Craig. Comment was made on the absence of a band of music, which might certainly have been provided by the Club. The following are the detailed results : Handicap Hurdle Race, of 50 sovs, 2 miles. 148 H. The Wanderer gelding carried on the running half-way along the hack stretch, when he was joined by Voltigeur, and. as the old grey seemed full of running, the hopes of his supporters were raised. Scallywag was battling along in good style in third place, whilst Tarragon was still last. There was no change in positions until the straight was entered, when [Mitchell moved oil Scallywag, and the favorite, gamely responding to the calls of his rider, was slightly in advance as they swept past the grandstand, Straybird and Yolligeur racing on terms in second place, with Kowhai, Sylvanns. and Tarragon three lengths away. Sylvanns started in pursuit of the leaders as they raced along the back stretch, and at the home turn displaced Voltigeur for third position, An interesting finish was promised, but Scallywag proved too good for his companions, and, taking the last obstacle in good style, the Turquoise gelding passed

As the trio drew near the hurdle by the avenue one wellknown sport was heard to say, “If the Gryphon gets over this jump he will run a good horse.” Mr Hood’s gelding took the obstacle in question in excellent style, and before another furlong had been covered was alongside of Cronje. A DOUBLE CHOICE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. It is understood that the stewards of the Wellington Racing Club will on Thursday adopt a scheme of dividing the totalisator proceeds between the first and second horses in the proportions of 75 per cent, and 25 per cent, respectively. They were prepared to do so yesterday but for a technicality. This system has been in vogue in South Africa for some years.
