NAPIER PARK RACING CLUB. FIRST DAY’S R ACING. Bv Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, last nigitt. The Napier Park Racing Club were favored with fine weather for the first day of their Winter Meeting. The attendance was large, and speculation brisk. The sum of £'5,381 was invested on the totalisator, an increase of £1,037 on last year's total. The racing was first class, and Air Piper’s starting quite up to the usual high standard. The dividends were all fairly good, that on The Guard in the Napier Steeplechase being the best. The racing was good, and, although there were several spills, no accidents of a serious nature occurred. The course was somewhaf soft from the recent rain. The following are the results : - Hack Handicap Hurdles, 11 miles.

Waterport held agood position all the way, and won cleverly by three lengths. Time 8.3 2-5, div. £0 2s. Electric Welter Handicap, 7 furlongs. 110 L. Stanley’s Jadoo, 10.6, Davis ... 1 201 R. T. E. Hianga’s Whitirea, 9.13, Donovan ... ... ... ... 2 102 T. H. Lambert’s Gipsy Queen, 10.2, Julian 3 Scratched ; Tirca. Also started : 110 Ruamahanga, 64 Derringcotte, 79 Amoureaux, 24 Passion Fruit, 57 Kissmary, 22 Robin Gray, 22 Rags. Robin Gray was loft at the post, and Kissmary carried on the running for five furlongs, when Jadoo came through and taking command in the straight won nicely b,y two lengths from Whitirea, anti Gipsy Queen who ran a great race for places, the former securing second money by half a length. Scratched : Evening Wonder. Also started : 64 Waitio, 49 Kauri Gum, 308 Opakttj 61 Venture. Opaku lost his rider at the first fence and Kauri Gum ran round the third obstacle, Waitio baulking two fences further on. Scallywag held a good load for two miles, with The Guard running second, Venture third, and Roller fourth, but when the pace was put on The Guard and Roller both came away from the other pair, and at the second fence
from home the leading pair rose together and cannoned, but neither came down, though The Guard was knocked out of his stride. Arnott, the rider, made a splendid recovery, and catching the tiring Roller at the last jump The Guard ran home an easy winner by four lengths. Time, C. 55 3-5. Div., £7 10s. Stewards’ Stakes, 1 j miles. 99 Hon. J. D. Ormond's Goyt, by Dreadnought—Thame, 9.7, Davis 1 46 J. Maher's Rubin, 10.2, Wall ... 2 102 G. E. G. Richardson’s Robin Adair 8 Derringcotte was scratched. Also started: 95 Ruamakunga, 115 Daphne, 89 Jadoo, 29 Tigress, 120 Whitirea, 60 Bonnie d’Eau.
Tigress was in command for six furlongs, when the field closed up, Goyt and Robin Adair loading into the straight, where Rubin challenged but could not get on terms with Goyt, who won, all out, by two lengths from Rubin, who was a length
in front of Robin Adair. Time 2.16 3-5, div. £6 17s.
Hunters’ Handicap Steeplechase, about 2 miles. 178 P. Neagle’s K Jam, bv Kaiwhaka, 12.3, No agio ... " 1 93 F. Rhodes’ Cronje, 11.2, Evans ... 2 5 A, Groom’s The Infant, 11.0, Groom i. ... 8 Also started : 145 Angle, 55 Billy, 95 Mangatcra, 14 Te Rehunga, 34 Nectar. All fell except the placed horses. The Infant was prominent for a mile and a half, when K Jam took charge, and won handsomely by three lengths from Cronje, The Infant a fair third. Time 4.4 4-5. Div., £3.
Handicap Hurdle Race, 100 sovs ; 1J miles, 143 Thomson's Evening Wonder, by Wonderland—Vesper, 10,11, Watt 1 99 Qihson’s Hautonga, 9.6, Woolley 2 13S Ruthcrfoial’s Social Pest, Clarke 3 263 Hairtriggcr, 71 Sylvanus, also ran. Hautonga cut out a good pace for nearly a mile and a half, when Evening Wonder went to the front and won easily by six lengths. Time 3.81 2-5. Div., £4 9s.
Settlers’ Hack Handicap, 45 sovs, once round. 100 W. Sargent's Tirea, by Kawaka— Maramatahi, 11.6, Wright ... 1 162 W. Rathbone’s Assayer, 9.10, Lord 2 T. Blake’s Cobra, 9.0, Jones 3 Also started : 110 Woodthorpe, 173 St. Just, 172 General Wolfe, 55 Merry Boy, and Cossaik. Cobra and Cossack were bracketed on the machine. Assayer was in front nearly all the way, but Tirea cut him down in the straight, and won easily 7 by two lengths, Assayer just beating Cobra for second place. Time 2.1 4-5. Div. £7 7s.
