There was fino weather for the landing of the Duke and Duchess from the Opliir this afternoon. The Governor-General | and administrator for the Government welcomed the Royal visitors at the wharf. There was a great crowd, and the visitors were enthusiastically greeted. It is estimated that 60,000 people lined the streets along which the procession passed to the Town Hall, where the Mayor presented an address of welcome. The streots and public buildings were splendidly decorated. Sydney, July 3. Tho State elections wore devoid of excitement. The streets wore crowded tonight. Tho feature, so far as the retu. Ministerialists, or Progressives, secured five, Labor four, and Liberals two soats in the city electorates, but tho Liberals scored heavily over the Progressives in the suburbs. Labor obtained six out of 27 suburban seats. The approximate state of parties is: Progressives 31, Liberals 53 Labor 10, Independents 13. A surprise in the City elections was the defeat of Sir James Graham by Mr Eden George. Another surprise was the fall of ex-Premier Reid’s constituency into the hands of the Ministry. Amongst those ro-olected are McGowan (labor leader), Waddell (treasurer). Cnnn (chairman of committees), Sec, Dan. O’Connor, and Carruthers. Melbourne, July 3. In reply to a question in reference to the New Zealand Commission’s reporting against New Zealand joining the Federation, Mr Barton said lie thought that the report would probably only refer to federation at tho present time. He did not imagine any such report would try to settle tho question for ail time.
