CHURCHES AND FIRES.

PROVISION NEEDED FOB ESCAPE. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night, Cr Bright, in the course of discussion on licenses, said that it might have struck Councillors that one church was so built that in the event of a fire alarm there would be great difficulty in the people getting out without mishap. Councillors said that the Presbyterian Church came under that heading. Cr Bright said that was the church he meant, and his view was endorsed by other Councillors. The Chairman said he did not see why churches should not make proper provision in such matters as well as hotels. Cr Whim-ay humorously suggested that some Couneiliors did not take much risk themselves—an implication that they did not attend church as often as they should, but no Councillor would voluntarily admit the impeachment. The Chairman asked would Cr Bright propose a motion. Cr Bright said ho thought it would be sufficient to refer the attention of the Inspector to the matter, which was agreed to.
