Invercargill, last night,

The trial of Charles Henry Arnett for attempting to murder .Jno. White and William Gorddfi by poison commenced before Mr Justice Cooper. Arnett was agent for a rabbit buyer, and misappropriated cheques for a large sum belonging to Charles Milne, rabbit trapper, for whom White and Gordon worked. Accused was tried last sessions for theft, and sentenced to three years. Milne, White, and Gordon lived together in a hut, and on October 29th were taken violently ill. An analysis disclosed the presence of strychnine in the vomit. The allegation is that during the absence of the men Arnett visited the but and placed strychnine in a bowl.of sugar, the motive being to get rid of Milne. Mr Hanlon, of Dunedin, defends thwaccused.
