NORTH GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.
SECOND DAY.
[By Telegraph— Press Association.] Auckland, last night. The second day of the North New Zealand Grand National Meeting was held at Ellerslio to-day. The weather was wet, but the attendance was fairly good under the circumstances. The racing was good, and there were large fields. The sum of I £8,900 was put through the totalisator. The following are the results : Second Maiden Handicap Hurdle Race, of lOOsovs. One mile and three-quarters. Mokomoko, 9st Buckland .. .. • • 1 Pungarehu, 9»t, Co'nway .. .. ..2 Plain Jack, 9st 81b, A. Williams .. .. 3 Also started : Cannonade, Haeata, Tiki,
Swiftfoot, Swimmer, Royal Conqueror. Tiki was the first into his stride, and ho showed the way up to the first fence, just clear of Swiftfoot. Going past the stand Mokomoko was having a shade the best of it. He unproved his lead in the run up to the hurdles opposite the stand, and, | drawing away going up through the cutting, he was four lengths to the good of Plain Jack at the top rise, the latter having supplanted Tiki, who fell away beaten.
When they came to undertake the tun across the top stretch Pungarehu was seen to bo moving through his field at a great rate. The grey son of Eros made a strong attempt to reach Mokomoko, but the task was too great, and Mokomoko lasted long enough to win all out by better than two lengths, Plain Jack a dozen yards away third. Royal Conqueror fell. Tiki and Cannonade burst a blood vessel. Time 3.40 ; div., £lO 7s. Second Maiden Handicap AVeltcr, of lOOsovs.
Lady Zulu, 9.0, Searle .. .. .. 1 Donnybrook, Taylor .. .. .. 2 Highlander, 10.0, Edwards .. .. 3 Also started : Balbirnie 10.11, Tresham 10 0, Repetition 9.8, Bandolier 9.0, St. Alma 9.0, King Edward 9.0, Kohara 9.0, Employer 9.0.
Tresham was the first to find his feet from an indifferent send off, and closely attended by Kohara and Alma, he carried the field round the six furlong post, where Alma had made her way into second place. Half a furlong further on Koahra ran up again, and he was at tho head of affairs when tho field dashed past the five furlongs post, Employer being now his nearest attendant. This pair ran almost on terms through the cutting just clear of Lady Zulu, but when they had reached the four furlong post Lady Zulu had ranged herself alongside well clear of Tresham, Kohara and King Edward. Half way up the straight Donnybrook and Highlander came through in pursuit, but they had no chance, as Lady Zulu cantered in an easy winner by better than a length from Donnybrook, Highlander three lengths away in third place. Time, 1.53 1-5. Totalisator, 1273. Dividend, £4. Grand National Hurdles, of 500 sovs; two miles.
Coeur de Lion, 11.8, Moore .. .. 1 Hairtrigger, 9.9, Williams .. .. 2 Cavalario, 13.11, Wright .. .. .. 3 Also ran: Cannougate 12.0, Moifaa 11.9, Nor’-west 10.11, ICaimate 10.11, Princess of Thule 9.3, Puffing Billy 9.0, Rufus 9.0, Royal Conqueror 9.0. from a capital send-off the colors of Ifaimate were the first to gain prominence, with Rufus and Cavalario right up. They had not reached the first jump before Princess of Thule and Rufus were at the head, but they had not topped the cutting before Hairtrigger took charge, and he showed the way to the jump by the four furlongs post, where Sundial came down, bringing down Cannongate and Nor’-west. Going across the top stretch Hairtrigger was just clear of Princess of Thule, and then came Rufus, with Cavalierio next. Going out of the bottom turn Rufus, Moifaa, and Cavalierio closed up a bit, and later on Moifaa and Cavalierio supplanted Rufus, and were racing almost together a length behind Hairtrigger. As they drew up to the hurdle at tho four furlong post, Moifaa ran up to Hairtrigger, and he was having just about the best of it when they cleared the fence, Rufus and Coeur de Lion being three lengths away next. Racing across the top stretch, Coeur de Lion was upsides with Hairtrigger, and this pair were running close up to Moifaa, who was still in charge. When they rounded the turn into the straight, Coeur de Lion came with a great rush, and
Cavaliero also threw out a challenge, a great race to the box resulting in favor of Couer de Lion by the best part of two lengths from Hairtrigger, who also came out again in the last bit, and beat Cavaliero by two lengths for second place. Time 4.5 2-5. Totalisator 2194. Div. £4 Is.
Tally-ho Steeplechase, of 150 sovs; about 3 miles.
Sudden, 9.12, Berry 1 Tarragon, 10.7, R. Hall .. .. ..2 Dingo, 11.9, Fergus 3 Also started: Sylvanus. The starters ran up to the sod fence in line where Sudden was the quickest to get over, jumping beautifully. Sudden increased his
lead, and, drawing out, was five lengths to the good going into the back, but as they drew up to the hurdle near the six furlongs post Dingo ran up, and he and Tarragon were racing at the head of affairs. When they made their way through the cutting to the hill Tarragon was the quickest over his fences, and he came bowling down the hill to tho stonewall, well clear of his field, but Dingo and Sylvanus were once more with him when the ’sod fence was reached. The trio eame in lino over the water double in front of the stand, four lengths to the good of Sudden, but as they made their way over the sod fenee through the rails into the back of the course Sylvanus was in charge a length in front of Tarragon, with Dingo next. Sylvanus continued to make pace to the hurdles opposite the stand, where he struck and unseated his rider, leaving Tarragon to show the way through the cutting. Going up through the trees Sudden ran up, and he
was but four lengths from Tarragon when they reached the post and rails the last time round. Clearing his fences in good style, and coming on by himself, he won, easing up, by half a dozen lengths from Tarragon. Time, 6.43 2-5; totalisator, 859 ; div., £6 2s.
Second Winter Welter, of 250sovs. Seven furlongs.
Sundial, 10.7, Cochrane 1 Gipsy Queen, 9.3, McMorran .. .. 2 Paul Seaton, 9.12, Whitehouse .. .. 3 Also started : Crusoe, Tukapa, La Gloria, Hastings, St. Peter, St. Olga, Honesty, Belfast, Mars, Picklock, Derringcotte, Winsome, Admiral Hawke, Volee, Motor, Castroline. After a lot of trouble at the post the field was sent away on the journey to a poor start, Crusoe being left standing, and St. Olga and Picklock getting best away. Going across the top stretch Sundiai closed up to within a length and a half of St.’ Olga, and when the home turn was reached St. Olga could be seen coming back to the field, and she faded out of the contest. When the distance was reached Sundial, Honesty, and Gipsy Queen occupied a leading position, and a capital run to the post resulted in favor of Sundial by two lengths from Gipsy Queen. Time, 1.36 1-5. Totalisator, 2113. Div., £54 6s.
Selling Steeplechase, of 100 sovs; about 3 miles.
Natation, 9.7, Clarke .. .. ..’ 1 Kowhai, 11.0, Tooman 2 Riot, 9.7, Russell 3 Also started: Verdi, Bob. Bob ran off at the sod fence, and Kowhai made the running to the water jump. When they had cleared the trees in the plantation it was seen that Natation had closed up to within three lengths of Kowhai, and although Kowhai was still a couple of lengths to the good when they ran up to the last fence in the straight, he failed to stay with Natation in the run home, the latter winning comfortably by a couple of lengths, Riot, the only other one to finish, being ten lengths away in third place. Time, 6.46. Totalisator £857. Div., £2 19s. The winner was bought in by the owner at £3l.
Ladies’ Bracelet, of oOsovs. Once round the steeplechase course. : - f Miss Drury, 12.5, Mitchell., .. .. 1 Kiatere, 11.7, Crowther .. .. .. 2 Peter Simple, 11.7, Neagle 3 Also started : Freewill, Jim, Marine, Blazer.
Miss Drury and Freewill jumped away together. Miss Drury, however, was only playing with her field, for, when Called upon, she drew away, and, making no mistake over fences, she ran in three lengths in front of Kiatere. Time 2,34. Totalisator 785, Div. £2 2s.
