DISASTER TO A FIELD BATTERY.
By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyrig London, Juno 2. Hunt, a missing New Zealander, has rejoined his regiment at Vlakfontein. Casualties .have occurred to a battery of twenty-eight field artillery. Lieutenant Jones and five others were killed, and twelve wounded. There is a consensus of opinion that the Boors at Vlakfontein aro in desporate straits. Tho cordon is tightening. On the 29th they were compelled to fight. Official reticcnco on the subject is attributed to Lord Kitchener’s recent warning to the War Office that many important facts in his published telegrams reached the Boors forthwith. Somo Boer prisoners aro being sent to tho Barbadocs. Tobias Smuts, one of Botha’s secretaries, has arrived at Standerton. Details of tho Ventcrsdorp engagement show that the Boers were concealed until tho full and empty convoys, with their escorts, had separated, going to their respective destinations. Tho Boors then attacked tho rear of tho Ventcrsdorp soction. Tho Potchcfstroom escort returned, skirmishing, and working round tho enemy. As soon as they fixed bayonets the Boers bolted.
