While the New Guinea punitive expedition steamer was anchored near the scene of the massacre, three large war canoes, full of natives, came alongside. A Norden gun was got ready, when the boats sheered off. They were not fired on. The wreckage reported to have been found is supposed to belong to a brig which left Sydney bound for New Guinea, She went ashore, and- two of the crew escaped in a boat. They witnessed the general massacre of the remainder of the crew and passengers. London, May 10. The London Missionary Society urges Mr Chamberlain to punish only the actual murderers of the New Guinea missionaries.
