INVERCARGILL NEWS.

A REMARKABLE APPOINTMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, last night. When the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board here appointed a secretary a month ago there was sharp comment on the fact that the appointee was the son of a member of the Board, who sat and voted by ballot on tho application, it being inferred that he had voted for his son. The appointment was made on tho vote of tho Chairman, the runner-up being the then Secretary, who held tho position for several years, but had never boon formally employed, having taken up work for the previous secretary, who was incapacitated. Two members of the Board gave notice to move at to-day’s meeting: (1) That the resolution of the Board appointing Reginald Day as Secretary and Treasury be rescinded, and (2) That the solicitor’s opinion be obtained as to validity - of a member of the Board giving his vote in favor of his son. When tho motions came on, the Chairman ruled them out of order as regarded tho first, because Day had been appointed for three months, and the proper course for those < who wished to undo the appointment was to movo that the Secre tary receive three months’ notice. As regarded the second motion, the voting was by ballot at the instance of tho present movers, and no one was supposed to know how Day voted. Mr D. Roche said that he would take steps to compel the Chairman to allow the motionsTo be discussed, and after some heated remarks tho mooting closed. GALES.

For nearly three weeks the .district has had gales and fierce squalls, with hail, rain, and thuudorstorms, a high barometer prevailing through the worst of it. The conditions arc improving. Fortunately tho worst of the disturbance was on tho coast lines. A DISAPPOINTMENT.

A large number of people who gathered to welcome the Southland troopers to-day were disappointed, as the men, for some unknown reason, did not come, although tho voluntoers were called out to meet them.
