A WARNING

To the Editor

Sik. —How much longer are we to live in jeopardy in Gisborne Arc we to stand by day after day and year after year, and see those nearest and dearest to us being laid low |with that dread typhoid fever, when it could be averted by obtaining a water and drainage supply '? What a record we are putting up, and what a name Gisborne is making for' itself—one to be proud of, Mr Editor, isn’t it, but perhaps the fever has never entered your door, and you don’t realise its importance. Just take a walk round the homes of sotne, and then visit the hospital and see its [ ravages. They talked about the plague some time back, but, sir, the plague is 1 nothing to this fever, which is in our midst, our best and strongest are taken in a few days, wo then temporise, and then wo relapse into the old grove. I venture I to state that the money spent directly on fever (without the irreparable loss of those ! taken) would pay the cost of a water supply. Is it because those in authority here, who are {perhaps larger ratepayers than the general taxpayers, are looking at the matter from apeeuniarypoint ofview? if so, the sooner they are ousted from their positions the better for us all, and themselves too. If sanitary matters are going to drift as at present, Gisborne before long will be worth a premium to live in. We had an election of Borough Councillors the other day, and surely after their promises to the burgesses, they will at once boldly take this , important matter in hand, and see it through without delay. Even if it does cost us yearly ' a pound or so more rates, what is £ s. d. compared to health. —I am, etc. r , Ratepayer No, 3. ’
