AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
A SEMI-MURDER. (Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. • Ex-Constable Cullimano died at Auckland Hospital yesterday from the effects of being brutally kicked by a man known as an “ oyster boy ” three years ago. It will be remembered that the unfortunate constable experienced great difficulty in his endeavor to arrest his man. Between three and four hundred people witnessed the arrest. Public sympathy, as is usually the case in street arresting in Auckland, was in favor of the prisoner. In sentencing Duffy to two years’ hard labor, Judge Conolly commented strongly on the case, and said the public who witnessed the constable being half murdered instead of assisting when called upon to do so, were really worse than the prisoner. Tn reply to a proposal that Mahuta, the Maori King, should come to Auckland with some hundreds of his followers, with the view of making a demonstration in , honor of the Royal visit, apart from the great gathering at Rotorua, the Hon. Mr Carroll has informed the Reception Committee that the scope of his proposals do not extend outside Rotorua, but there is nothing to prevent the Committee undertaking the cost of a native demonstration in Auckland if-they choose.
