RECRUITS FOR SOUTH AFRICA.

| Special’to Times. | Wellington, last night. It has now it transpired that Captain Hughes’ request for men, though carried out with tho knowledge of tho Colonel of the Prince of Wales’ Light Horse, was not sanctioned by Lord Kitchener. Lieutenant Hughes interviewed the Commandant of the Forces .yesterday in regard to Lord Kitchener’s cable to the Premier, which elicited this information. 110 says Colonel Ponton informed him that tiie Government would try and prevent men going as recruits, but, of course, could not stop them shipping as ordinary passengers. Lieutenant Hughes agreed to drop the word “ recruit ” from the advertisement, and confine himself to assisting men to leave for South Africa unconditionally. He says that he has a perfect right to recruit anywhere for an irregular body of horse.
