STOCK SALES.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) reports having held its periodical stock sale at the Matawhero yards on Thursday, 25th inst. The weather was fine, but the attendance was rather smaller than usual, due probably partly to the fact of the Supreme Court being in session. The yardings of stock were fairly numerous, and although bidding dragged at times, all eligible lines of either sheep or cattle sold at fully up to late prices. Sheep.—We yarded about 1500 sheep, and sold all but about 100. Below are some quotations : —Ewes, two, four and six-tooth, of good class, 11s ; aged ewes, In forward condition, from 7s 7d to 8s 4d ; cull ewes, 3s to 6s; wethers—not many on offer. We sold a small parcel of fair quality at 11s lid. Lambs : Several good lines of shorn lambs were yarded. Best quality brought 8s; other lines sold at from 3s 7d to 7s, according to size and condition. Cattle.—Our yarding comprised 160 head, and all but about 20 were sold under the hammer; the class of cattle was very fair. Cows : Beef cows brought from £4 10s to £5 17s 6d, and appeared in good demand. Store cows brought from ,£3 ss. to L 4 ; 18-month heifers brought L 3 8s 6d; steers, 15 to 18 months, £3 8s; yearlings, £2 16s. Calves, £1 to j£2, according to breeding and age. Forward steers brought £5 to £5 17s 6d. Pigs.—We sold about 40 pigs, mostly indifferent sorts, which brought from 3s to os 6d for small, and 15s for larger sizes. Horses. —Several young horses were cleared. Draught colts, about 18 months, brought £l4 ; light unbroken draughts, £8 to L'B 10s; hacks, £3 12s 6d to £5 2s 6d,

The next sale is on 22nd May, and, as the turnip and young grass crops on the bush clearings should be available by then, the Company anticipate an active demand at slightly increased rates for all kinds of sheep suitable for putting on turnips, and they recommond entries of this character.
