By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. Alfred Burrell and J. PI. Cate, who pleaded guilty to breaking into the promises of J. E. Nathan and Co. recently, were brought up for sentence this morning. Burrell, as the leading offender, was sentenced to 12 months. Cate was placed on probation for two years, and ordered to pay .£1 expenses. Robert Wilson was fined £5 by the Magistrate for keeping an improper house. The Hairdressers’ Assistants’ Union are submitting a case to the Conciliation Board, demanding shorter hours, a minimum wage, and limitation of the number of apprentices employed. The allotment of the half-million loan has been completed. Those who tendered for ,65000 will receive allotment in full at the price tendered. This is done with the object of spreading the loan amongst as many as possible.

Judge Edwards decided to-day that a consignment of matches of Bell and Co., recently seized by the Customs, were not liable to forfeiture.

A meeting of combined School Committees was held here last evening to consider a scheme outlined by Dr. Smyth, Chief Inspector for the Wanganui Education Board, for the establishing of a combined technical and high school in Palmerston. The proposal was approved, and Dr. Smyth was asked to place his scheme in readiness to lay before the Minister of Education. Dr. Smyth stated that he intended asking the schools to form an association for the purpose of holding yearly displays of athletics, calisthenics, singing, etc., on similar lines to the schools in North Canterbury. Christchurch, last night. The Masonic Grand Lodge session concluded this morning. Practically the whole morning was occupied in a discussion on a motion to rescind the decision of last October that the Grand Lodge should be from next year permanently located in Wellington. The motion was eventually rescinded by a large majority, and it was resolved to adhere to the present system of holding the session in the four centres in rotation.
