WHATAUPOKO ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Whataupoko Road Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present; Messrs Matthews (Chairman), Ranger, Joyce, McConnell, and Sievwright. A letter was read from the manager of the Bank ot Australia asking for a resolution to be passed limiting the Board’s overdraft to £32o.—Carried.

Mr J. Sandlant wrote calling attention to the necessity for a culvert at the corner of Ballance and Whittaker streets, as the road was impassable.—Work to be done.

The County Council wrote stating that the Council had decided to erect a culvert across the main road near Hall street, guaranteeing £lO towards the cost, the Board to provide the remainder.—The Chairman said the Board had agreed to pay £6 towards the cost. —lt was stated that the work had been completed, but the account had not been sent in.

Mr W. J. McCluskie asked that the drains opposite his property and the outlet drains be attended to. He would contribute two days’ wages for a man. The road, also, needed repair.—The Chairman said that, with the approval of two members, he had authorised the work to be done.—On the Chairman’s suggestion, a committee was appointed to inspect the road. Messrs Brosnahan and Co. wrote stating that they had been prevented by wet weather from completing their gravel contract for Mangapapa. but were now pushing the job on to completion.—Received. The Royal Reception Committee wrote soliciting subscriptions for providing a fitting reception for the Duke and Duchess of York. —Reply of sympathy to be sent, but the Board had no funds for the purpose.

The Chairman asked that certain work be done at the Clifford-street drain.—To be considered at a special meeting. Messrs Joyce and McConnell reported on certain necessary work on the Mangapapa road, involving the alteration of the position of a culvert.—The work to be done.

Messrs Sievwright and Joyce were instructed to look into the matter of tyre regulations. Mr Sievwright said they ought to be in a position to submit to the new Board the true financial position, and he proposed that a committee be formed to prepare a statement to be submitted to a special meeting on Tuesday next, from which it could be handed on to the new Board.—Mr Matthews said the financial statement was always laid before the annual meeting.—Mr Sievwright said as a matter of prudence they should supply the new Board with a fair, clear statement of how the rates stood, and how other matters stood. Ih past years a large amount of rates had been allowed to go to ruin. It was their duty to let the new Board see what they had done.—Mr McConnell said they had been doing their duty as a Board," and' whilst the accounts were up-to-date he did not see there was any necessity for it.—Mr Ranger seconded Mr Sievwright’s proposal, which was carried, the Board to meet as a committee of the whole.

Mr Ranger protested against the work being carried on in Stout street, that was, the whole of tbs road being gravelled. If only the holes had been repaired they would have had money for culverts.—The Chair-, man said the. work vwas done according to specifications' approved by the Board. Certain sums of money had been allocated for certain streets. If the metal Rad‘not been pat on it would have cost them five or six times as much. Referring to a complaint at the want of roads in some parts, he said that with their limited means they were gradually extending their roads. Their poiioy had been to do a little and do it well.

Accounts amounting to £l7 were passed for payment,
