At a meeting of tho committee of the Victoria Alasonic Institution, Dr Close reported that ho was highly gratified with the manner in which his scheme had boon received, and promises of support tendered. It was reported that- a considerable sum had already been collected for the scheme. i DRAPERS’ ASSISTANTS. A Drapers’ Assistants Union having been formed, a statement of the conditions of employment and wages has boon submitted to employers. A SILLY GIRL. At the inquest on the body of Alay Susan Heather, the evidence was to the effect that- she was anaemic, sleepless, and in poor health generally, but no one suspected that she had a tendency towards suicide. A verdict was returned of “ Drowning while temporarily insane.” WORKMEN’S COTTAGES. At a public meeting at Anderson’s Bay to urge tho extension of the city tramways to that district-, it was pointed out that there was a considerable area of land alongside the roadway which was in private hands, and blocked building operations. This, it was suggested, might be taken for workmen’s homes, and it was resolved to petition Government, asking that tho land be resumed under the Land Settlement Act, between Alusselburgh and Anderson’s Bay. PRESENTATION. Air Oxley, of the Telegraph Department, was this evening tendered a social and presented with a handsome gold chain and pendant by his brother officers, on the occasion of his transfer to the Christchurch office.
