THE LEGAL PROFESSION.
SOME STATISTICS. 13y Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. Statistics compiled by the Secretary of tho Wellington Law Society show that at the end of 1900, thoro were 603 solicitors practising in tho colony, one to every 1844 of tho estimated population, or one to every 330 male adults. In 1899 the proportion was one to every 1334 or every 1333 respectively. There were besides many persons —probably more than 200—qualified to practise'on payment of fees. Nevertheless, students are not deterred from following this overstocked profession. Last year there was a distinct falling off in the number of applicants for admission as barristers, only thirteen being received, as agaiust 23 for thcj’previous year, and 23 for the year before. These numbers do not include solicitors already on tho roll who apply for admission as barristers. There aro now seven more solicitors in practice than in 1899-1900, while the population has increased by 14,177. The proportion of solicitors to the population is tho greatest in Auckland, and the lowest in Dunedin.
