AMERICAN COMPETITION.
Ouit cablegrams yesterday morning referred to the stand that was said to have been taken in regard to American competition. The following message from Paris, dated March 2ord, is useful for explanatory reasons :—“lt is rumored in Vienna financial circles, in which a new anti-American feeling seems to be inspired by the Government, that negotiations are going on for a coalition of continental powers against the ever-increasing commercial development of the United States. Negotiations are being carried on, it is said, between all the powers, with the exception of England and Russia. According to another version Russia is the only power which hangs back. This idea, which is far from being a new one, is regarded by practical politicians as utopian and one which cannot be carried out at a moment when the European powers—as is proved by the polemic between M. Dewitte and Count von Bulow—are not far from a tariff war among themselves, and when Austria cannot even succeed in coming to a permanent commercial arrangement with Hungary.” The fact of the matter appears to be that the Americans have seized the opportunity for a good advertisement. They are calling world-wide attention to the fact that they are encroaching on all markets, which is another way of saying that their goods are the cheapest and best. Certainly the Americans can beat .all other nations as advertisers.
