CENSUS RETURNS.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, Saturday. The census returns for the County of the Hutt, including the boroughs, show an increase of 10,650 since 1896. The population of Wellington City has increased from 37,441 to 43,886. The suburban boroughs have all increased but one, Melrose, from .2044 to 1995. Karori has increased 1024 to 1212, Onslow 1249 to 1499, Hutt 1520 to 1824. Exclusive of the boroughs, the county population is 7167, the increase, including 512 members of the Seventh Contingent, being 1417.

'Napier, Saturday. The census returns show the population of Hastings Borough to be 8650, an increase of 452 as compared with the 1896 census.

Auckland, Saturday. The Dcvonport Borough census is 3814, an increase of 804.

Oamaru, Saturday Tho census gives the population of Oamaru at 4836, a decrease of 389 on the number of the census in 1896.

An interim statement of the census gives the population of Tasmania as 171,066. The population of Hobart is 24,576, and of Launceston 18,043. The population of the colony in 1891 was 146,667.
