Weiss and Memmott, Australian billiardists, played a match for 750 points, the first-named winning; The winner’s best break of the evening was 118. A private cable states that Mr T. H. Jones, an Argentine resident, replaces Mr Stafford on the Board of the Biver Plate Company. Mr Jones resides in London. A house in Upper Queen street has been burned. It was owned by Patrick Ryan. A boarder named Thomas Howell was severely injured by jumping from an upstairs window. The insurance on the building was £'Boo in the South British, and furniture £IOO in the Commercial Union. Pahiatua, Saturday. At a public meeting a league was formed to further the project for the proposed electric railway scheme to Pongaroa. Wellington, Saturday. English mails of April 6th left ’Frisco by the Ventura on the 18th April, one day late. In the divorce suit Neill v. Neill, the Chief Justice to-day made the rule absolute. The Agricultural Department have been requested by the Imperial authorities to send another shipment of remounts to South Africa. James Herbert Evans, before the Police Court, yesterday on ten charges of impudent frauds on local tradespeople, was to-day sentenced by the Magistrate to 12 months’ imprisonment on one charge, and three months on each of the others, the terms to be concurrent. Dunedin, Saturday. The Star’s Roxburgh correspondent wires that Vcalo Bros’ store, Miller’s Flat, was completely destroyed by fire last night. The lo.ss is £350 above the insurance. The origin is unknown.
