ACCIDENT TO A GISBORNE JOCKEY. (Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. The first day's racing of tho Avondale Jockey Club was hold on tho Ellerslic racecourse yesterday. Tho first race, tho Maiden Plato, resulted in a victory for tho Howitzer gelding Goitsir, who commenced his career in the pony races. His supporters received the handsome dividend of £27 12s for the £1 invested. Forty-seven, who was made a red-hot favorite, and jumped very badly, won tho hurdle race comfortably. The Avondale Handicap brought out a field of sixteen, and fell to the Needle. It was a very brilliant race indeed for the first three-quarters of a mile to witness, tho big field being in one bunch. Materoa hold a comfortable position for the first part of the journey, but did not come into prominence throughout the race. Alateroa, previous to being saddled up, looked very much out of condition, and appeared _to bo very weary. However, not withstanding the appearance of tho Gisborne horse, Alateroa found many admirers. Tho many Gisborne friends will regret to learn that Buchanan broke a bone in liis leg whilst engaged in the Avondale Handicap. Buchanan rode Laetitia and gained second place out of a field of sixteen. The Pony Handicap was won by Lady Avon in a cantcr. Afajor George’s Ragabrash, with Joe Sceats on his back, won the Juvenile Handicap. The First Hack Handicap was an interesting race, and the winner turned up iu a rank outsider, Trcsham. who returned the nice div. of £lB 19s. In the Auction Stakes tho favorite Telephone was successful after a very exciting finish. The winner was sold immediately after the race. St. Olga was backed very heavily for the Railway Handicap, but ran very disappointingly. Chanfc rode St. Olga very badly, and finished nearly last out of a big field. Alomcnt proved the winner, and Hastings ran a good race and gained second place. Owing to the accident that befel Buchanan, Hastings was ridden by Gainsford.
