USEFUL INFORMATION.
A MACADAM I’LA NT. At the informal mootin'' of the Borough Council last night, the following letter from Mr Clms. Dunlop, with enclosure, was read : “ The Town Clerk, Cisborno. “ Dear Sii:,— ■■ f enclose you a letter re road metal from L’atutahi quarry, which may he of interest to your Council. “You will notice that the total cost of breaking and conveyance is (Is) one shilling per ton. To this you would require to add the cost of quarrying and delivery ) the hopper of the breaker, also royalty, if any. “ All the machinery is the most up-to-date, and the whole cost is £2150. I do not know what the cost of quarrying is, but it seems to me that tbo total cost per yard delivered upon the roads in Gisborne, spread and rolled, should not exceed, ,say, £5. “ Messrs Hadley and Co. informed mo that if they had a sufficiently large contract at the prices you have paid hitherto, they would make your Council a present of the plant, which is worth .£2150. “If your Council requires any further information I shall be pleased to supply it. '• Yours truly. Chas, Dunlop.” Mr Clms. Dunlop, . Gisborne. Dear Sir.—Dor the purpose which you suggested putting the above plant to, we would recommend the following : No. 4 Gates style “D”j breaker, capacity up to DO
tons per hour ;C 180 0 0 Screen, bearings, and gearing 00 0 0 8 h.p. nominal' compound traction engine by Ran- ’ somes, Sims, it- Jefferies VOO 0 0 12-ton steam Hoad Holler 080 0 0 2150 O' 0 \ With regard to the arrangement of'the plant, we would suggest that the breaker’ be erected at the'quarry and be driven by the traction engine, which traction cryginc could be used to haul the broken metal i*i waggons to wherever it is required to be spread. IB The breaker is capable *mT putting through a quantity up to about 240 tons per day of eight hours, and the cost from the time the stone is delivered at the hopper of the breaker until screened and loaded in the waggons ready for transport would not exceed threepence per ton. The haulage by traction engine could bo done for ninepeueo per ton, taking the average distance at 18 miles. ' The plant which we suggest above is the most up-to-date, and by far the most economically worked, and is, wc think, suited to your requirements in every way. We shall be pleased to supply you with any further information you may require on the subject on hearing from you.
Faithfully yours, Hadley and Co,
