THE ESPLANADE ROAD.
A SATISFACTORY OFFER AT,. LOWED TO PASSED BY.
The following letter was received by tl 3-own Clerk yesterday momin" : The Town Clerk, Gisborne. Dear Sir, — I am this morning in r ccipt of your letter of this date, and no that no tenders were accepted at la , m S ht ’s meeting for the Esplanade Road, The Council on the 3rd April receive the Overseer’s report in which he est mated the work would cost £177 15s. ] was unanimously agreed on this report t call for tenders for the work. From this morning’s paper I learn tha two tenders were put in, one for £35( and one for £199 10s. . As I consider the repairs to this road t no of very considerable interest to th. place generally, and your’Council havin' considered that the tenders were beyonc What they should expect, I offer, subjee: to reply by to-morrow, to do the work as specified in your Contract No. 59 at the price of £l7l 15s, being the estimate ol your Overseer, and I enclose herewith a cheque for £2O as deposit to cover the amount arranged for in the specification. The weather being fine now, it is of importance to push this work on as quickly as possible if the job is to be a good one, and as your Council advertised for tenders - presumably with the object of carryin" roc work through after they had their Overseer’s report, it seems fair to mo as a person very much interested in using the load, that I should ask the Council to carry out what they proposed to do. I shew my bona fides in offering to do the work at the price specified by your Overseer.—Yours faithfully, F. J. Shelton. A special meeting of the Council was com cnod for last night to consider the oiler, but only the Mayor and Crs. .Johnston and Jones attended. After waiting for thirty-five minutes the Mayor said that there was no use waiting any longer, and he must declare that the meeting had lapsed for want of a quorum, 'lhc reason for non-attendance was, ho supposed, that the Council had practically broken up prior to the election of a now Council. Cr. Jones: And some arc against the expenditure. The Mayor : Yes, several have expressed themselves that way'. Cr Jones : First of all we should have -t to rescind the resolution before this offer could lie availed of. Cr Johnston ; \Ve would require a unanimous meeting for that. Cr Jones : And it is not likely that would he obtained when wo arc on the eve of the election of a new Council, which should now have the deciding of the matter. The subject was then dropped.
