By Telegraph—Press Association! Auckland, (Saturday. The Industrial Institute discussed the question of preparing children for district scholarships. The idea was suggested that regulations be framed by the authorities to prevent scholars being coached outside school hours for scholarship examinations. It was agreed that the question of scholarships should be referred to a special committee to report to the annual meeting. Reports are cuvrent respecting H. Johnston, for several years managing director of the Kauri Timber Company. Johnston left Auckland on April Ist for Melbourne to interview the directors there. Johnston was in Sydney on Thursday. Since his departure discrepancies have been discovered in his accounts amounting to between £2OOO and £3OOO. Feilding, Saturday. The poll on the question of rating on unimproved values was carried by a majority of 212.

AVakapuaka, Saturday. The Eastern Extension Cable Company’s repairing steamer Recorder arrived in the bay this afternoon to do some testing work in connection with one of the cables between New Zealand and Australia, repairs to wbich she has just finished. Bouvy, who was arrested last year as a French escapee from New Caledonia, but was released by the Governor after being conveyed there, has issued a writ against Count De Courte, the French Consul, claiming £6OOO damages. Christchurch, Saturday,

The complicated and contradictory Hanmer Plains wages case, Clara Clark v. R. W. Hood, came to a sensational ending in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Clara Clark had been employed by Hood as servant, and left, with £67 16s wages alleged to be owing to her, for which she claimed. Defendant swore that the girl had been paid. This morning the Magistrate gave j udgment for the girl for £42 17s, and ordered proceedings for perjury to be instituted against Hood and his wife. Hood, who was in Court, was remanded for a week, bail being allowed.

Oarnaru, Saturday.

The Ariadne enquiry continued this morning. Four members of the crew were examined. The evidence of three foreigners conflicted with that of the owner and officers. One German named Wind deposed that the mate bad twice during the voyage told him that the captain was going to try and run the vessel ashore and that the mate intended to have a few pounds. Wind stated that he had not previously told anyone of this conversation. He said the mate was not sober both occasions. Freke, another sailor, who is acknowledged to be a friend of the owner, stated that the man who should have been on watch and who had described the stranding, had really not been on deck at all. It is expected the enquiry will last for several days.
