THE MAYORALTY.
v To tiie Editor of the Times.)
Sir, — It is usual in municipalities that the honor of the office of Mayor should be held for one year by a citizen who has the confidence of the residents, and that each year another citizen should have the opportunity of giving his services to the Board, and so in the course, of time a number of our citizens who have the ability should be able to do their duty to their town and receive due honor for same. Mr Townlcy has held this office for several years. Is it fair to trespass on his good nature to give his time to the Borough ? Is it fair to other citizens that Mr Townley should monopolise this seat of honor? Is it fair to our Borough that the idea of one man should rule the place ? Is Gisborne so poorly off for public men that there is the necessity of accepting Mr Townley as Mayor year after year ? I think Gisborne people should have new blood in their municipal affairs, _ and I cannot help thinking that those citizens who have ably assisted the affairs of the Borough in times gone by would continue to assist the interests of their town by loyally supporting such a new Mayor and Councillors who may be elected at the forthcoming election. Trusting to see this office of Mayor go round year by year to fresh men who will do their best to iinprovo each year the progress of the place,—l am., Ratepayer, .
