Scotland Yard authorities, in conjunction with American detectives of Pinkerton’s Agency, ascertained that Gainsborough’s picture of Georgina, Duchess of Devonshire, which was bought by Messrs Agnew for ten thousand guineas, and stolen from their house on May 16th, after being cut from the frame, was concealed in a town of the Western States. Morland Agnew visited Chicago and identified the picture, which was unhurt, and has been taken to England. London, April 9.
The Britannic, with the returning Imperial troops, after being aground in the Suez Canal for a week, has been re-floated.
A joint commission has settled the long-standing French-Italian Red Sea frontier difficulty by assigning the bay and village of Asab, annexed by Italy in 1882, to Italy. Queen Alexandra, en route on her return to England from a visit to her parents at Copenhagen, has gone to Kronberg to visit Princess Frederick of Geimany. The barque Stuart, bound from Liverpool for Wellington, is aground on the coast of Carnarvonshire. There are good prospects of salvage. St. Petersburg, April 9. The Chinese Royal Sacred Library, filling two railway waggons, removed by the Russians from Mukdon, has arrived at St Petersburg.
Great ferment continues in Russia. The Liberals are gratified at M. Vannovoski’s appointment, and consider he is likely to override the wishes of the Holy Synod. Fifteen hundred and sixty persons have beenjjarrested at Odessa in connection with the recent noting.
Paris, April 9. The Italian Mediterranean Squadron has arrived at Toulon to take part in tho French naval display. It was warmly welcomed.
