VOLUNTEERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. Four mounted rifle companies, Canterbury, Malvern, Waimaltariri, and North Canterbury, accompanied by the “ E ” Battery, with six guns, put in some excellent work during the holidays. The column numbered about 200, and was commanded by Capt. Snow, of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. They left Christchurch on Friday morning, working that day on the Port Hills, and camping on Friday and Saturday night at Governor’s Bay, where more good work was done on the hilly country. On Saturday or Sunday, they marched round to Lyttelton, camping there till Monday morning, when they left for Christchurch, by way of Sumner. The work done by tho Battery was specially good, the guns being taken to seemingly inaccessible positions. CHESS TOURNAMENT. The Chess Tournament was continued to-day. R. J. Barnes boat J. O. Barnard. D. Forsyth beat W. E. Mason. J. Wood and J. Mason played a drawn game, and the game between Barnes and W. E. Mason was also drawn.
