A later roturn shows that Jd'v Watkins, the Labor candidate, beat Mr Gilbert by a large majority. Mr Clark (Protectionist) has a good lead ; otherwise later returns to midday, including tho Senate, have practically unchanged the position.
Melbourne, March 30. For .Yarra, Mr Tudor (Protectionist) was elected. Mr Groom, not Mr Goso, is a Freetrade candidate for. Flinders. Ilis election is not yet assured. Received 5.57 p.m., March 31. Sydney, March 31.’ Mr Watkins, elected for Newcastle, is a Labor Protectionist.
The latest returns for the Senate place Mr Nicld ahead of Mr Gray. v x Mr Reid has received a telegram from Perth, stating that six Freetraders have been elected to the Senate, and four Freetraders and one Protectionist to the House.
Adelaide, March 31. Tho elections are quiet. None of the returns arc complete, but the latest practically assure the return of the following to the House : —Kingston and Bonython, Protectionists ; Batchelor, Labor Protectionist ; Holder and Glynn, Freetraders. For the other two scats, Poynton and Solomon, Freetraders, arc leading, lor the Senate, Baker, Charleston, and Symon, Freetraders, and Downer, McGrdgor, and Playford, Protectionists, arc leading.
Brisbane, March 31. In the House of Representatives, for Brisbane, Mr Patterson, Freetrader, has been elected. None of the other returns are complete. For tho Senate, Higgs, Dawson, and Stewart, Labor, and Drake, Ferguson, and Glassey, Protectionists, are leading.
(Received April 1, 12.57 a.m.) Sydney, March 31, Tasmania and South Australia are being treated as one electorate, tho Tasmanian vote being subject to the Hare-Spence system.
Brisbane, March 31. The feature of the elections of Queensland is the success of the Labor party, As far as the present returns go that party has secured four out of six Senators, and five out of. nine seats for the House of Representatives, thus speaking with no uncertain sound on the question of a white Australia. All the principal sugar districts returned Labor representatives. (Received April 1, 1.2 a.m.).
Melbourne, March 31,, Groom, Freetrader, has been elected for Flinders : Kennedy, Protectionist, for Moira; Skene, Freetrader, for Grampians ; Harper, Protectionist, for Meruda ; Phillips, Protectionist, for Whnmera.
Brisbane, March 31. Groom, Protectionist, has been elected for Darling Downs, and McDonai’, Labour candidate, for Kennedy.
