KAITI ROAD.
(To the Editor of the Times). Sir, —Surely Mr Partington has not read the Borough Council report properly; otherwise, he would not state that I was one qf those who shelved the petitioners’ request re the above road. If Mr Partington will only enquire, he will find that Councillor Nolan proposed that the Council give £SO, provided the petitioners subscribe £SO more. Councillor Jones proposed as an amendment : “ That the Public Works’ Committee report on the work, with a view to the work being done.” I seconded the amendment, at the same time stating that it was useless to wait till the petitioners subscribed £SO. I also stated that possibly the road could be done for £4O or £SO. Surely Mr Partington cannot call that shelving the question; for, had Mr Nolan’s proposition Jieen carried, it would mean shelving it till the petitioners subscribed £SO, which might be a long time.—l am, etc., E. P. Joyce. (To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —Some people like a lot, and Mr Partington wants a great lot. The Borough Council should have an estimate and no-tice-of motion before spending a great portion of the rates on a road that is not used for the borough. Childers road is a quagmire in the winter; it may improve withthe sand-gravel being put on, but the footfipath will be as bad as ever. If money can-,,be lavished without enquiry on the other-side of the river, why not give the tovyn side a turn ?—I am, etc., Ratepayer.
