A LIGHT RAILWAY.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. The Government has practically decided, in accordance with the advice of an engineering expert, that -the proposed light line of railway from Kawakawa, on the North Island main trunk line, shall be carried into Stratford, not into Eltham.

The following paragraph appeared in ihe Times last week:—

Matters in connection with the light railway to connect Stratford with the in. terior are progressing very satisfactorily, and will soon reach that stage when a definite announcement can be made. We learn that the engineer in charge has sent in his report to the Government. As to the contents of the report, nothing, of course, has been allowed to transpire, and it will probably be a week or ten days beforo the Government come to any decision upon the recommendations of their officer. With regard to the gauge of the line, it is probable that the standard 3ft 9in will he adopted, mainly because it is anticipated that the traffic will bo heavier than was thought likely to be the case. But, still, the line would be built of lighter material than that of the main line. There are several alternative routes after the fine leaves Toko, but which will he adopted is, of course, not yet known. The engineer is about to make au inspection of the various deposits of shell rock;in the district.
