DUNEDIN EMULATES GLASGOW.

M UNC[PALISTNG TRAMWAYS. MAYOR’S GENUINE SOCIALISM. [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Dunedin, last night. The City tramways were taken over by the. Corporation to-day, the deeds having been signed. The Mayor and Councillors of the suburban boroughs through which the trams run, and others, were entertained at luncheon by the City Corporation and tramway directors. The Mayor, in speaking, said the City Council had mado a good deal. If they had not taken the trams others would have stopped in. This was confirmed by Mr G. Fenwick, Chairman of Directors, who said the company had an oiler of .018,000, and could get it to-morrow. Tlie Mayor went on to say that Dunedin now had its own water supplv, gasworks, abattoirs, and its own tramways. All that was wanted to make it an ideafcity was to own the whole property, and become its own landlord. He said it in all seriousness, and did not care if lie was called a Socialist of the deepest dye. Afterwards, the City Councillors and guests, in three decorated ears, went over the line, followed by about twenty cars, placed at the disposal of public. For the rest of the afternoon and evening, free rides wore given. As a matter of fact, the ears were mostly taken possession of by the juveniles, who travelled up and down, while most of the ordinary travellers had to walk.
