LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS.

(To the Editor Gisborne Turns.)

Sin, —I have read your leading article on this head in this morning’s paper. I quote your own words: “ Where is the Railway League—that body which at one time promised to develop into a spirited debating society 2 ”

Now, the Railway Loaguo started with the object of getting a railway—the railway is under weigh, and this has been the result of the work of the Railway League.

I think if you, as a disseminator of matter for public information, would take a little trouble, before crying down anything that has been done, to publish facts, it would bo more encouraging to people to try and take a hand in the advancement of tho interests of the place.

It is very unfair for a man who owns a printing-press to publish any information which is not correct. In this case I say you are distinctly incorrect in referring to the League in tho way you have done. The Railway Loaguo lias dono good work, and tho result of their work is going on now. Tho Railway League is not responsible for the work not being more expeditiously pushed forward.—l am, etc., F. J. Shelton.

(To the Editor of the Times.) Srit,—You suggest the energising of local bodies. Granted that would be a good tiling, but would it not be wise to drop out of existence half the local associations that now exist, and replace them with a strong vigilance or progress association that would take in hand such subjects as the harbor ? Does anyone think the river, at its best, will over bo suitable for Gisborne '? It may bo kept open at an enormous cost. If wo are ever to have an outer harbor it can only come about by the energetic action of some local organisation.—l am, etc., PROGRESS.
