TEACHERS’ SALARIES
APPROVAL OF GOVERNMENT SCHEME.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] New Plymouth, last night.
The Finance Commit too of the Taranaki Education Board, after conferring with the representatives of the teachers, and considering the Inspector’s recommendation of increased grants to touchers as proposed by the Department, presented its report, which was considered by the Board to-day. The Committee found that tlie Government scale was on the same basis as the Board's, except for one or two anomalies of little importance. They regretted not being furnished with the details of the sehomo prepared by the Department, but recognised that the scheme was a colonial one, the classification being based on attendance, coupled with teachers’ qualifications and marks for skill, greater importance being attached to the latter, and greater increments going to the smaller schools than to the larger. They did not concur in the proposed Conference of Boards at present, and not until a permanent colonial scheme was submitted. They considered the action of the department to be in the right direction. The report was unanimously approved by the Board, several members expressing pleasure in assisting the department to bring about a uniform scale.
A full report of the proceedings will be sent to the various Education Boards.
