LOVED AN ACTOR.
CUSHING LETTER FROM A ROMANTIC GIRL.
Tim action for divorce brought by Mr S. V. Nossitcr, an actor whose stage name is Sydney Valentine, because of bis wife’s association with Mr Arthur Smythc, a bank manager, was continued at London on .January 01.
In opening the case for the respondent, Mr I >eono said that on one occasion in 1894 Mrs Nossitcr found a letter in-her husband's pocket. It was from a girl of about sixteen whom Mr Nossitcr had met at Deal. With it were two sprigs of ivy and two locks of golden Imir. This is what it said :
Dearest, — ft is no use trying to bo good, for write to you 1 must. It cannot bo so very wong, as sho does not lovo you., How dreadful it must lie for you to have to live with anyone you do not like. One thing f should like, which I should think you have got, dearest ; that is one of tho sweetest mothers-in-law on earth. It seems ages since you wero here.
“ f wonder whether wo shall over sec each other again. How I do long to see you, Vul ! ”
“Don't you third, ivy is sweet? I found it on one of tho trees where we used to meet in the evening. . . . My thoughts arc always with you. . Don’t worry about me being miserable. “ This is a most disgraceful letter to send to you, dear; but I know you will excuse it. . With all my love — Luka.” While admitting that Mrs Nossitcr had given way to drink, counsel contended that it was due to the husband's neglect. For Mr Smythc, as co-respondent, Mr liiderwick said he and his wifo had merely taken an interest in Mrs Nossiter when she was neglected by her husband.
Tn cross-examination Mrs Nossitor (who had denied her husband's allegations) said that when she separated from him ho kissed her and said, 11 Good-bye. I suppose you will go to the devil.” The case was adjourned.
