THE MIDNIGHT SCENE.
FUTURE PUNISHMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, March 8. In the House of Commons during Tuesday’s scene Mr Jordan, member for South Fermanagh, was named and expelled by mistake. Mr Louther, Chairman of Committees, expressed regret, and the suspension was rescinded. Mr Balfour’s amendment to the Standiiig Orders, providing that members whose conduct is such as to involve their forcible removal be suspended for the remainder of the session was carried by 254 to 51. It was debated till towards 6 in the morning. In his resolution amending the Standing Orders Mr Balfour accepted a modification that each member named be summoned separately to obey the Speaker. An amendment was proposed by Lord Hugh Cecil to add imprisonment to future cases until further orders, but it was resisted, even by the Government side. Lord Hugh Cecil offered to withdraw it, but the Nationalists claimed a division, and the amendment was negatived by 426 to none, amid laughter and cheers. An amendment to shorten the period of suspension was rejected.
