A GENEROUS OFFER.

Per Press Association—Coyyright. Wellington, last night. Mr C. Pharazyn has written to the Victorian College of Governors offering to donate £IOOO to college funds, on condition that some land near Kilburnie Park is acquired as a site for college buildings.

A VICTORY FOR MR WARD. The Postmaster-General announces that the Administrators at the Post-offices of Italy, Egypt, Portugal, Costa Rica, and Mexico having agreed to deliver New Zealand letters prepaid at Id, the postage on letters for those countries is forthwith reduced to Id for each loz, FEDERAL CONTINGENT.

The Premier informs the press that nearly all replies received yesterday afternoon and to-day from Members of Parliament on the question of sending a New Zealand contingent to Melbourne are to the effect that the colony should be represented at the opening of the Federal Parliament, but by a much smaller contingent than that suggested by Mr Barton. The Government has not yet decided whether or not a coniingent shall be sent.

SEVENTH CONTINGENT. Lieut. W. G. Forsyth is the latest appointment to the Seventh Contingent. To-night there were 387 men under canvas, apportioned as follows : —Wellington district 117, Canterbury 96, Auckland 90, Otago 84.

THE PLAGUE. The port health officers throughout the colony have received instructions that while engaged in the examination of vessels from Australia, they are not to unduly or unwarrantably interfere with commerce. They are not to hesitate to take steps to have the period of quarantine extended, if considered necessary. Mr Mason, Superintendent of Health, says that it is very necessary at the present juncture that local authorities should be on the alert.
