AN AUCKLAND CASE.
FAHEY SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS.
By Telegraph—Per Press Association. Auckland, last night. At the Supremo Court, a middle-aged man, named Wm. Fahey, pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempting to commit rape at Parnell, in January, 1900, on a girl, named Jane Row, aged 18 years. There were two other counts, of indecent assault, and of committing rape on a girl. The Hon. J. A. Tolo (Crown Prosecutor), in opening the case, said the prosecutor was at the time of the alleged committal of the offence in the employ of Mr D’Arcy, and prisoner was in the employ of the next-door neighbour. The girl retired to bed on the night in question, and was awakened by what sho took to be a cat in the room. She felt somebody take hold of her hand, and immediately afterwards felt a handkerchief, saturated with chloroform, pressed over her mouth. On regaining her senses, she found the prisioner in bed with her, and,on his leaving, immediately gave the alarm. , Prisoner was found guilty, and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
