[Special to Times.] Auckland, last night. The news of Advance’s defeat in the Australian Cup race this afternoon lias come as a greater shock than the result of his defeat last Saturday. This afternoon. the local bookmakers were so confulcnt of New Zealand's crack proving victorious that they absolutely refused to accept money from the sporting enthusiasts who were so confident- of Advance winning in this Australian Cup. It appears that Advance's performances were no better than Seahorse’s were when the Gisborne jockey, Sceats, rode him in tho Australian Cup last year, and Scahojfse had adverse circumstances to contend with. Seahorse was not the favorite that Advance was. It will be remembered that Seahorse gained third place in the Esscndon Stakes, run at Flemington last vear.
