CARLSON WINS THE GOVERNOR’S

MEDAL.

The second championship meeting of the affiliated Caledonian Societies of New Zealand, postponed from yesterday, was held on the Recreation Ground to-day. There was a good attendance, about 2000 being present. L. C. McLaclilan won the 100yds championship in 9 4-5 secs ; the 440yds championship in 50 2-5 secs.; the half-mile championship 2 min 6 secs ; and running from the scratch mark he was beaten by two yards in the 440 yards handicap, run in 49 1-5 secs. . J. Sexton won the mile championship in 4 min 49 4-5 secs. A. Carlson won the 120 yards hurdle championship. Time, 20 sees. He also won the throwing of 161 b hammer championship, the distance thrown being 90ft 3b in; the tossing of the caber championship ; putting the shot championship (distance 40ft 8in); and he was second in the long jump, hop, step, and jump, and Border wrestling championships, winning the medal presented by the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, for the best all-round athlete.

R. Scott won all the wrestling championships, catch-as-catch-can, collar and elbow, and Border style, and takes the special prize presented by Mr R. D. D. McLean for most points in wrestling. W. Wyeth won both the hop, step and jump (40ft. 6m.) and long jump (18ft. in.) championships. D. L. Dalton won the high jump championship, sft. sin. W. Clarkson scored in the bicycle championship. Time, 2 min. 25 3-sth secs. In the highland dancing, J. MeKechuio won the championships for highland fling and reel of tulloch, scheuntreus and highland reel. C. Smith won the sword dance championship. McKechnie also won the championship for pipe playing marches, D. Campbell being champion piper for pibrochs and strathspeys and reels. The 120 yards handicap and 440 yards handicap were both won by R. Strickland.

A. Campbell won the mile handicap. W. Gumming won the amateur handicap. , C. Burton won both the two and five mile bicycle handicaps.
