Fire at Hawera.
BENEFIT OF A WATER SUPPLY.
[By Telegraph-Press Association.] Hawera, last night. A firo' broke out at midnight in the centre of the business portion of the town, but after an hour's work it was got under. It started in a large shed behind several shops facing High and Regent streets. Tho shops were mainly old, and it looked at one time as if there would bo great difficulty in saving them. Fortunately, the new water supply stood the first demand on it, and the splendid pressure secured was greatly responsible for tho fire being got under. The shops of Hannah and Co. (bootmakers) were slightly damaged, as was Robinson’s plumber, and the West Coast Farmers’ Trading Assoeiation’s mart. Brunette, jeweller, though escaping the fire and wator, lost considerably, his shop being broken open and tho tilings carried off, some to a place of safety, and other in the pockets of undesirables. Duxfield’s, Robinson’s, Fortune’s, Gungall’s, Davis’s, Paterson’s, Milnor and Tarry’s, and Hannah and Co.’s stocks were got out, and the loss in those quartors will not be heavy. Tho auction mart stock was damaged a good deal by water.
