The Minister of Public Works has gi\ T en instructions for a survey of tho country between Inangahua Junction and Reefton with a view to extension of the Midland railway to the latter town, so as to join the projected line between Westport and Inangahua Junction. Bouvy has instructed his solicitor to issue a writ claiming £SOOO for wrongful arrest and imprisonment. /*- The Wellington Trades Council has selected three members to give evidence before the Federation Commission, with instructions to oppose strongly the entrance of New Zealand into the Commonwealth. t. - -- Rollo Ho veil passed the Senior Civil Service examination. Christchurch, last night. An inquest was held to-day on Reuben Davis, killed by the train yesterday at Middleton crossing. A verdict of accidental death was returned. Palmerston North, last night. A largely-attended meoting of ratepayers was held in the Theatre Royal last evening to discuss sewerage matters in the toAvn. It Avas decided to request the Borough Council to carry out tho new sewerago extension under supervision of tho Council’s staff. Dunedin, last night. At the meeting of the H.A.C.B. Society this forenoon it was unanimously resolved on the motion of Bro. Dennehy (Timaru), that the meeting place on record their great gratification at the complete vindication of the Marist Brothers from the gross charges levelled against them [in connection with the Stoke inquiry, and expressing their strong condemnation of those who in Parliament and in the press used every means to arouse an adverse public opinion, thereby prejudicing the cause of innocent men, and calculating to defeat the ends of justice.
