Concert at Te Arai.
Despite the unfavorable state of the weather last evening, there was a largo attendance at the Te Arai school concert, which passed off most successfully. Mr U’Ren-occupied the chair, and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. The concert opened with an overture by Lumbye’s band, the piece selected being “ Genevieve,” which was tastefully played, an encore being demanded. Mr J. S. Allan followed with “ The King’s Own,” and ho was compelled to respond to an encore. Miss O’Connor gave a very pleasing rendering of “ Because I Love You,” and being recalled gave “ The Golden Shore ” with equal success. Mr J. M. Samson is always a favorite, and as usual he received a most enthusiastic reception, his song causing great amusement, and being several times encored. Miss Tucker, . assistant teacher at the Te Arai school, who. has recentlyarrived in the district, sang “Daddy” with' much' expression and feeling. As an encore piece she gave “ Just as the sun went down.” Mr Weir contributed “ The Irish Jubilee Meeting ” with great success, and in response to an encore he gave a solo on a curious instrument made from a jam tin, and which was supposed to represent a violin. _ Miss Stewart greatly pleased the audience with her singing of “■ Bid Me to Love,” and being encored she gave ‘f In Old Madrid,” Lumbye’s band played a second. selection, entitled “ My Polly,” which was much appreciated. Mr Woodward was received witli great applause, and gave a spirited rendering of “ Good Rhine Wine.” Being encored, he sang very successfully “Theplace where the old horse died.” Mr C. H. Evans delighted those present with his song, “ The Man That Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo,” and the audience insisting on an encore, he gave “ Just One Girl,” in a capital manner. Mr Weir rendered, with great expression, the humorous song, “ The Doctor,” and Mr J. S. Allan contributed a second item, “ Home Boys Homd." At an . interval during -the evening, refreshments ' were handed round.- A 'dance followed the concert' and was largely attended.
