THE IMPERIAL TROOPS.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wellington, last night. At the dinner to the Imperial officers the Premier presided, and in proposing the combined forces of the Empire said the time was ripe for the colony to ask the Imperial authorities to strengthen the Australian Squadron. His Administration had considered the question, and after discussing the matter with the statesmen of Australia, the conclusion arrived at was that representation must be made in that direction. New Zealand would have to lead the way in this, as in other projects. If extra contributions were required, the colony was willing to pay them. He repeated his former statement that he did not approve of a standing army, but would strengthen the volunteer system. Colonel Wyndham, replying, heartily thanked New Zealanders for their hearty reception, and paid high tribute to the Maoris, whom, he said, had been gallant and honorable enemies, but were now good friends. The troops leavo for Napier this afternoon.
